wyoming has high property taxes and an income tax to support the school district. there is an upcoming levy to pay for renovations to the 3 elementary schools. open enrollment would permit non-district families to receive the benefits of these investments without paying for them. that would result in resentment. and i think it would be unfair. wyoming sports are terrific, even if there is only an ocassional state championship run.

Wyoming is probably the closest example we have to Beechwood's academic and athletic achievements. Speaking of the two, Bernie was at the game Friday. Wyoming pays the excessive taxes but what if the OOD kid is paying 'tuition' to attend? I think Beechwood's is somewhere around $4,500. My buddy told me once but I forget. I know it's a little more than what I was paying for private school when my kids were young.

When Wyoming won their football state title, the vibe and energy in the neighborhood was incredible. Same when Deer Park's basketball team won their state title. To me there's very very little to lose and a whole lot to gain.

I disagree with this.

Mainly b/c look at the state of DP's Bball program after. DP winning a state title didnt put DP on the map. It put them on the internet for gentry lying but no one pressed the issue with OHSAA. 1/2 the kids Gentry/DP claimed were "homeless" rode the 17 every day and got off in college hill to go to their families place. DP had a lot to lose. And it been proved by where the program is today and where it will be in 10 years from now.

Wyoming was already on the map for their winning tradition in football , their regular season win streak (which was one of the longest in state history) and the way their community back their athletic programs as a whole.

The same people who supported DP basketball while they Stole a state title where are they today? b/c I have been to DP's gym 10+ times since then for basketball events and they aren't there.

there are ways to combat that though.

Three Rivers was in the same boat with that very thing you mention. We now charge for open enrollment. has been this way the past 2 years I believe.

The point I raised had nothing to do with your first paragraph or actually much of anything you went on in your rant. The point again - Why wouldn't a school district copy Beechwood's model - which is legal, has been in place for decades, and clearly works and works well - Academically, Athletically, and Extracurricularly. The reference to Wyoming and Deer Park was simply to explain that when a community has a team, especially in a sport like football or basketball, that makes a state title run, the energy, passion, pride, excitement that exists in that community skyrockets. Wyoming is historically good at everything but that state championship season, the community felt different. Imagine if that was something you felt or got to be a part of consistently???? 21 state finals in football the past 50 years. On average, every other year they are playing for a state championship. The Band has 11 state titles and a couple national championships....didn't know there was such a thing for HS band.

So again, there is very little to lose and a whole lot, IMO, that could be gained by copying what Beechwood does. I'm curious why schools haven't/wouldn't take a serious look into it. Pagan brought up 1 point about the taxes and resentment of those kids/families but if a family is charged tuition to be an open enrollee, they are still paying. Wrestling coach at Indian Hill said they won't want to water down academics and worry about behaviors. Beechwood has a screening process and they are a blue ribbon school so it's not like their academics are suffering due to their open enrollment process.

The feeling in Wyoming was so electric in the year of their state title run (and I'd argue just as strong again in '22, when they lost in the state championship game) in large part because the community knew it was their kids out there representing a 2x2 square mile community. Wyoming residents take a lot of pride in the fact that their teams compete at a high level without any loopholes. Their teams are made up of kids from the community representing the community. Some years, like last year, you have a roster of circa 40 kids and guess what - Aaron Hanco*ck and his outstanding staff still take that team to the regional championship game. One problem with Ohio high school sports is schools like Wyoming eventually run into the likes of Glenville or Alter, the two schools they lost to in the state championship and regional championship games the past 2 years, that don't have the same geographical limitations. Some states have different playoffs for private and public schools....just saying. Would it be great to win state every year? I guess so. But is it really going to be the "same feeling" as when your kids, many of whom have been playing sports and going to school together since they were little kids, did it as a team? Give me consistently good teams that win together and lose together, with occasional, magical moments of brilliance over ho-hum state title runs year in and year out if it means losing the essence of what it means to be a team that represents your community. No thanks.

I don’t think any school could just choose to duplicate what Beechwood has. In fact, what does Beechwood do that any private school doesn’t do? Tuition paying students and admission standards. Should work for any of them but it doesn’t. Beechwood is a unicorn. Highlands almost matched Beechwood’s success for many years but they have fallen off a little recently. I just don’t see any school anywhere just deciding to be another Beechwood.

Beechwood is 1 of 1 in Kentucky because they hardly have to compete against any other upper-middle class suburban schools of their size. Most of their competition on the state level comes from poor rural county schools or from small towns. Football is not as competitive state-wide in KY as it is in OH as well.

The renovations are complete replacement of all three elementary school buildings.
